CEREMONIA

Field Notes: Leaning From the Land

On July 10, our inaugural artist-in-residence Sarah Frary opened Ceremonia at the Berry Biodiversity Center — the first solo exhibition made possible through our partnership with the Berry, which gives every ALCES resident artist a space to show their work on their own terms.

Ceremonia is a powerful mixed media show built around Sarah's personal writing on her relationship with plants and traditional plant knowledge. Placing that work inside a university biodiversity center does something quietly radical: it expands what counts as knowledge on campus, setting lived relationship and inherited plant wisdom alongside the specimens and the science.

At the opening, Sarah sang for us. It was such a gift — the kind of moment no residency agreement can plan for, and exactly why we do this work.

Congratulations, Sarah. We're honored to have been part of Ceremonia's beginning.
